Oh no! The Blob is back...and he's teamed up with The Brotherhood.
This week brought to you by:
Our Team:
Today is a very special day for the X-Men! They have all just graduated from Professor X's prep school curriculum. As the X-Men become more self-sustaining, Professor X also decides that it's time he let's his team of marvelous mutant operate on their own for a while.
Xaiver tells the X-Men that he will be leaving soon, and that he will be appointing one of the team as leader of the X-Men while he is gone...surprise, it's Cyclops.
Oh c'mon, we all knew it was going to go to him, stop saying spoilers...you're in public.
After being appointed the leader of the X-Men, Professor X shows Scott a special project he has been working on for quite some time. Inside a room, Cyclops witnesses a cluttered mess of steel and wires. Xaiver explains that he has created a powerful ESP machine which will be used for detecting new mutant brain waves to help locate other mutants.
He calls this device "Cerebro".
After Xavier leaves, Cyclops sits alone in Xavier's old office brooding at the sudden understanding of just how lonely leadership can be. The rest of the team set off to explore Greenwich Village to celebrate their graduation, Scott stayed behind to monitor Cerebro.
While the team is out, and Scott sits quietly, Magneto is up to no good. He's gone to the circus, but not to play games or ride rides...to recruit. The mutant he's after is right in the middle of a performance where he shows off his mutant strength. This man is called The Blob.
We last met The Blob in issue 3. The X-Men tried to recruit him, but instead he brainwashed a group of carnies to raid the Mansion before Xavier put a mind block on him and all the other people involved in the raid.
A small fight ensues as Magneto puts the carnival barker inside of an animal cage. The Blob gets Magneto into a headlock, but Magneto uses his powers of magnetism and forces The Blob off of him, knocking him into a trailer...unblocking The Blob's memory.
The Blob suddenly remembers how much he hates the X-Men and joins Magneto and The Brotherhood.
Instantly, Cyclops receives an update from Cerebro. Scott realizes that The Blob must have found a way to unblock his memory and join The Brotherhood. I think that's why Scott got promoted to leader...he was able to figure all that out from a flashing light that says "Blob" on it.
He sends word to the rest of the team, all of whom are in a beatnik coffee shop where they are worshiping The Beasts feet (seriously).
Magneto somehow radio's the X-Men and tells them the exact address that he and The Brotherhood will be at. So, apparently not suspecting a trap, the X-Men hop into a helicopter and fly to the location. When they arrive, Magneto rips the helicopter to shreds with the X-Men inside.
Angel grabs onto a broken helicopter blade and charges at The Blob...who stands there and takes the hit unflinching. Try as they might, the X-Men cannot do anything to harm The Blob, let alone slow him down...that is, until Magneto unleashes a torrent of torpedoes at the super heroes.
The team dodges and avoids the torpedoes while The Beast, caught in The Blob's grasp, throws a handful of mud into his face and takes him by surprise. The X-Men make use of this advantage and knock him to the ground, then freeze him in a block of ice.
Fed up with all this aggravation, Magneto turns his torpedoes on the group of mutants, including The Blob!
The team hides behind The Blob, who takes the full force of the torpedoes...and doesn't even get scratched. When the smoke has cleared, Magneto and his Brotherhood have escaped, this time in their Magna-Car...a car run by magnetism (come on, you should know this by now).
The Blob swears off all mutant teams, and decides to go back to the carnival, where he is appreciated.
The issue ends on a funny note, as the team's only mode of transportation, the helicopter, was destroyed. Angel flies off to hail a cab, and Cyclops asks to borrow some money for cab fare.

So another Blob issue, another issue where The Brotherhood stir up some shit and then run away when it gets rough. However, something really important was introduced this issue. Cerebro.
It was really cool to see how early this came up in the books. Honestly, it's been cool to see how many of these things have been in X-Men canon since the beginning of the series. Cerebro being one, The Danger Room being another.
While I will say the stories are repetitive and sometimes dull, there is always one or two elements I latch on to while reading. Though since the stories really are fairly flat most of the time, there isn't a lot of reading between the lines, or very important reviewing to be done on them in these lower sections. I think the best thing I can do now is just give my opinion and move to the next issue with hopes that there will be something really exciting in it.
Until next issue!
